In Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord, companions are crucial for growing your clan. They can lead secondary parties, run elite caravans, govern towns, or act as specialists in your main army. Because wanderer stats are bound to their surnames, understanding companion suffixes is the fastest way to recruit the best talent.
Companion Mechanics & Suffixes
Every wanderer spawning in the taverns of Calradia has a randomly generated first name, but their surname (suffix) is fixed and defines their starting statistics, skills, traits, and equipment. To find active wanderers, open the in-game Encyclopedia (press 'N'), go to the Heroes tab, filter by Occupation: Wanderer, and browse their current locations.
Best Suffixes by Specialization
Here is a breakdown of the top-performing companion suffixes currently spawning in v1.2:
| Target Specialty | Wanderer Suffix | Key Starting Skills | Strategic Value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Surgeon | the Surgeon / the Healer | Medicine (80 - 100) | Reduces troop deaths, keeping high-tier soldiers alive. |
| Engineer | the Engineer / the Scholar | Engineering (80) | Speeds up siege engine construction and breach speed. |
| Scout | Frostbeard / the Hunter | Scouting (120 - 140) | Increases map sight range and movement speed. |
| Caravan / Quartermaster | the Spicevendor / the Swift | Trade, Stewardship (100) | Increases party size limit and caravan revenue yield. |
| Governor / Captain | the Golden / the Shieldmaiden | Tactics, Leadership, Combat | Ideal for leading secondary combat armies in war. |
Assigning Clan Roles
"Companions do not apply their skills passively. You must explicitly assign them to roles in the Clan menu for their stats to take effect."
— StratGaming guide
Once you recruit a companion, press 'L' to open the Clan Menu. In the party list, select your main party and click on the drop-down under the companion's name to assign them to one of the four key roles:
- Surgeon: Medicine skill is used to heal wounded units.
- Engineer: Engineering skill is used to build engines during sieges.
- Scout: Scouting skill is used to track tracks and detect enemy armies.
- Quartermaster: Stewardship skill is used to expand your max party troop capacity. Note: If you have high Stewardship, you should assign yourself as Quartermaster.
